Adelaide Casino, is South
Australia's only casino. It is located in Adelaide's historic
Railway Station building and provides some 90 gaming tables
and 950 gaming machines. Table games include roulette,
blackjack, Casino War, craps, Caribbean stud poker, baccarat
and poker. The Casino is also Adelaide's premier entertainment
venue, boasting several bars, function areas and restaurants.
These feature live music on almost a daily basis, from a wide
range of bands, DJ's and artists. The Casino also plays host
to several large scale events, including annual fashion shows,
live sport screenings and the biggest New Years Eve
celebrations in Adelaide. Adelaide Casino is also the 10th
largest employer in South Australia, currently employing over
1100 staff members. In 2007/2008, Adelaide Casino paid over
$41,000,000 in taxes and charges to the State and Federal
Governments.
History
The Adelaide Casino opened in 1985 and was owned by the
South Australian government. In June 2000 it was sold to
SKYCITY Entertainment Group. It officially became the SKYCITY
Adelaide in April 2001. A three year interior redevelopment
project began in December 2003. In 2009 the name reverted to
Adelaide Casino, although the property is still owned and
managed by Skycity.
Controversy
Following widening of North Terrace to create space for two
tramlines, the historical Balfours Pie Cart, which famously
sold pie floaters, was removed from its location. Adelaide
Casino also holds the states only table gaming license, thus
giving it a monopoly on this particular industry. The South
Australian Government will not issue out another table gaming
license to any interested party.
